What We are Feeding

We decided to try a new puppy food with this litter!  They LOVE it!!

Taste of the Wild High Prairie Puppy.

We feed our adults the Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream so I thought we would try their puppy food.... and I have been impressed!

We are feeding 3 times a day approx 1/2 - 3/4 cup per puppy per feeding.

We have been feeding the babies at our mealtimes - 6:30am, noon and 5pm.

Its very important to not feed the last meal very late to insure there are no messes in the crate during the night!

Puppies may be a little finicky when they go to their new homes.  If they are, we suggest you soak the kibble in broth and mix in just a teaspoon of plain yogurt and maybe even a little chicken.

We use Mountain High Full Fat Plain Organic Yogurt.

You should also take the water bowl away at least an hour before bedtime to help prevent accidents in the crate as well!

If your puppy's stools get loose - which can happen with the stress of leaving their mom and siblings - you can also mix in cooked oatmeal and a teaspoon of canned pumpkin.  They LOVE it!!

We will be sending you with a small blanket that has been in with the puppies and mom... so it has their smell. It helps them not be so sad at night.....  but please know the first few nights are hard!!  They are not used to being alone!!

The size of the puppy's crate should only be big enough for the puppy to turn around in.  Hopefully you were able to purchase a crate with a divider panel.  If not you can make one... or borrow a smaller crate from a friend.  Otherwise your baby may sleep on side of the crate and use the side as a bathroom!!

Growing

The babies are getting big fast!!   We have started clipping their nails every week so they will be very used to it when they leave for thier new homes!  We have also been holding the babies on their backs for at least 5 minutes every day.  They are very good babies!!

I do apologize for taking so long to post new pictures!  Our 6 kids get out of school this week and our oldest daughter is graduating!  Almost every night we have had recitals, performances, banquets, etc! And to top it off, I got really sick!!  Luckily I have an army of good puppy holders here to take good are of the babies while I have been in bed!

Anyway.... the babies are doing great!!  We are really happy with how they are growing and maturing!

Photos From the First Couple of Days!

Most of these were taken the first day!!

Welcome New Desdia Families!

Welcome to our puppy blog!

This is the best way we have found to keep everyone updated on the puppies. I will post pictures and make posts about the puppy's development and growth.... as often as I can!

Please be patient with me!! I have 6 children and life gets VERY busy at times..... I will do my best to post new pictures at least once a week..... hopefully!

After the puppies reach 4 weeks old we will start having puppy visits! We want the puppies very well socialized so we will put you to work holding and playing with babies!

So.... Here we GO!!!!

The Desdia Routine

So I was thinking you guys would like to know exactly how we raise our puppies!!

For the 1st four weeks, the puppies are raised right in the middle of our family room.  This way the puppies get used to regular household noises like the TV, vacuum, blender etc etc right from the start!

We start clipping nails around 2-3 weeks.  We want the babies to be used to and comfortable with having their nails trimmed by the time they leave our home.  We try to clip them every week to week and a 1/2....

We worm the puppies at 3,5 and 7 weeks.....

We introduce puppies to puppy food around 4 weeks old.  The first week it will largely be soaked puppy kibble (Earthborn Holistic) blended in the blender with a homemade puppy formula (plain yogurt, goats milk, etc.)  Its very runny and makes a HUGE mess!  But its fun to watch them dive in!!  LITERALLY!

About the time the puppies start eating regular food, we move them into our puppy room - which is located right off of the family room.  This room has a doggy door.... so we can teach the puppies to go outside to potty.  Just like human babies.... once they start eating solid food.... they start getting a little stinky..... so I like it when they learn fast!  Usually by 5 weeks old they are using the doggy door regularly!

As they get older we will start transitioning them to less and less mushy food... and add in chicken, veggies, etc.

We also introduce them to the older dogs and kitty...... we want them well socialized by the time they go to their new homes!

In the mornings we will take the puppies a few at a time and have them sit in our kitchen during the crazy morning routine of our family!  I just want the babies to appreciate music too!  (or at least not be frightened of the noise!!)  :)

We will pick puppies at 7 weeks old.   There are show puppies being kept from this litter so we have to wait until then to see their structure!

Around 7 weeks we start crate training the puppies at night.  By 8 weeks they are usually all going 7 - 8 hours in the crate at night with NO accidents!!  Yay!!

Our goal is to make the transition as easy as possible on the babies.... as well as their new families!!

A Head Study

I have had some questions about what kind of heads the puppies will have as adults.  So....  I went through and found some pictures of the "heads" behind them in their pedigree!

Glory (on the left) Whisper's mom with Faith (Whisper's 1/2 sister)
Whisper looks almost identical to her mom Glory!

I tried really hard to find a head shot of Ralf - Whisper's dad - but I did find another really nice stacked photo of him....  this one really shows how blocky his head is... even in profile!

Gunner's dad Flinga - from Sweden

The first litter we ever did with Whisper was with Gunner's dad Flinga!  So... a very similar pedigree to these babies...  here are sme of those puppies at 8 weeks old!
